Standard Gray Scale Images.
Abstract
The NCS had been a leader in the development and promulgation of standardization imagery for facsimile. They have sponsored the scanning of standard CCITT documents at resolutions of 200, 240, 300, and 400 lines per inch and stored the resultant data on tape. This data has been used by many experimenters in the development of standard compression algorithms for digital facsimile. This work contributed significantly to the development of the Group 4 facsimile CCITT standard which will be of considerable value to the U.S Government. All of this past work has been directed solely at binary, black-white imagery. At the present time, there are no CCITT Recommendations that provide for the tranmission of gray scale imagery via Group 4 facsimile; the CCITT is now beginning the process of developing such a standard. The digital transmission of gray scale imagery is of particular importance to the U.S. Government for the transmission of information such as ID photos and maps. Unfortunately, there is no set of standard gray scale images which can be used by all experimenters in the facsimile field to develop gray scale transmission algorithms. The purpose of a standard set of gray scale images is to make the results presented by various experimenters in the field directly comparable without regard to differences in image content. As a result of this project, all experimenters engaged in performing studies for the CCITT regarding gray scale transmission techniques will have access to magnetic tapes containing digitized versions of the standard images.
