A Computer Aided Tool for Entity-Relationship Database Design.

Abstract

This thesis involved the design and implementation of a computer aided design tool to assist the database designer in the design process. The tool provided the database designer an interactive environment to support the creation of entity-relationship diagrams for individual view designs. Background information is provided describing the different phases in the database design process, the entity-relationship model and problems confronting designers when integrating several local views into a global view. A summary of approaches for solving the view integration problem and methods used in translating a data model to a specific database management system are also discussed in this report. Requirements definition and major design issues, with emphasis in the human computer interface area, are also addressed. With the use of a standard graphics package, the tool provides a high degree of program portability. The result of this project is a DBMS-independent tool that aids the database designer in the design process.
