A Study and Implementation of an Automatically Retargeting Microcode Compiler System.

Abstract

This thesis began the implementation of an automatically retargeting microcode compiler system. The system includes three components: a compiler, a simulator, and a retargeter. The system is part of a design environment based on the design language VHDL. The retargeter accepts a machine description written in VHDL and produces the machine description written in VHDL and produces the machine dependent portions of compiler code. The machine independent compiler and the produced portions of code are then compiled to create a complete compiler, targeted to produce microcode for the machine described. Partial implementation has been accomplished. The retargeter uses a data base containing microoperation algorithms to implement each source language instruction. For each source language instruction, the retargeter finds the appropriate algorithm for the machine and generates code to implement that algorithm, tailoring the algorithm to match the addressing scheme requirements of the machine.
