Development of Central Nervous System Radioprotectors.

Abstract

This project is attempting to develop practical drugs which would be able to protect the central nervous system from acute functional injury produced by ionizing radiation. By 'practical' is meant drugs which could be self administered and which do not, by themselves, alter the functional capacity of the central nervous system. Further studies have identified that drug hydrophilicity inhibits CNS protection, but that at least three candidate drugs appear worthy of further study. Keywords: NSC-62857; pseudoureas; WR-2529; sulfonates; WR-238605; I-202; cysteamine derivative; drug carriers; perfluorocarbons; WR-2721; radioprotection; radiation protection; radioprotective agents; dimethyl sulfoxide; perfluorocarbon; glutathione.
