Workshop on Diseases Caused by Leukocytic Rickettsiae of Man and Animals.

Abstract

The aim of the workshop is to present available information on pathogenic rickettsiae of man and animals that infect reticuloendothelial cells, including circulating leukocytes but not erythrocytes. Particular emphasis is on the nature and properties of these agents and their biological relationship. Methods used for isolation of these rickettsiae and their manifestations in affected animals and in vitro cultures is stressed. When indicated, the pathogenesis of the diseases caused by these agents in the natural and susceptible-experimental hosts is discussed, along with the available diagnostic and control measures. In syndromes where specific knowledge is existent, the host-parasite-vector relationship and the epidemiologic features of respective parasites are critically elucidated. The zoonotic potential of some of these agents is considered. This paper includes the program of events and abstracts on the topics by the speakers.
