United States Coast Guard Local Area Network (LAN) Requirements Analysis.
Abstract
The United States Coast Guard (USCG) Headquarters has initiated a study to examine its system and user needs for data communications for the 1985-1990 time period relative to the installation of a local area network (LAN). This examination included an analysis of data communications within and between Offices in Headquarters and between Offices and external locations. External data communications includes electronic exchanges with field USCG organizations, with USCG centralized data bases and with locations outside of the Coast Guard. Under the direction and guidance and with the assistance of The Shore C3 Systems (of the Electronic Systems Division, of the Office of Command, Control and Communications, TES) and representatives of other Headquarters Offices, Wilson Hill Associates has conducted a six month study. The results indicate that there exists a requirement for a LAN within the Headquarters Transpoint Building. The study has identified both system and user requirements for a Headquarters LAN. The need for a LAN is based primarily on the necessity for interconnectivity among workstations throughout Headquarters. A LAN will allow data to remain in electronic form where it can easily be manipulated and is readily available from multiple locations upon request.
