Estimation of Parameters in Latent Class Models with Constraints on the Parameters.

Abstract

This paper reviews the application of the EM Algorithm to marginal maximum likelihood estimation of parameters in the latent class model and extends the algorithm to the case where there are monotone homogeneity constraints on the item parameters. A likelihood ratio test of the hypothesis monotone homogeneity is proposed. The hypothesis is of interest because all standard item response theory models assume that it holds. Keywords: Isotonic regession; Up-and-down blocks algorithm.
