A Requirements Analysis for Implementation of a VAX-Based Microcomputing Environment at AFIT.

Abstract

A survey of Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) students, faculty and staff was conducted to determine the specific user requirements for microcomputers. The statistical analysis of the results indicated that the IBM PC compatible systems dominated the AFIT environment. The results also indicated an immense requirement for word processing software and letter quality printers. A study was made of current software licensing trends. Site licensing and multiple purchase discounts appear to be increasingly popular among the major software companies. Copy protection of software has all but disappeared from the marketplace. The recommendations include the incorporation of the microcomputer into the AFIT curriculum and increased support of microcomputers by the AFIT administration in order to maintain the quality of education.
