Hierarchy of Computer Automation Needs.

Abstract

Understanding automation is no longer an option. Every facet of life in the United States is being touched by the computer. Individuals are the key to effective use of the technology. On this basis Maslow's work on motivation was adapted to postulate a Hierarchy of ADP Needs in direct parallel to his hierarchy for individuals. A theory is proposed that any computer automation program does not address the ADP needs hierarchy, in order, will not be effective. The corollary is: Those ADP efforts that try to address levels of need that are not adjacent will most likely fail to be used or effective for the people it is intended to serve. The pervasive extent of automation makes it important to step outside the traditional ADP field to seek insight into problems. Continued work in the behavioral sciences may help to trigger the increased insight by both the 'User and developers of current and future automation systems.
