Evaluation of Ultra Fine Metal Mesh Filter Media in Pleated Configuration for Application to Air Filters for Diesel and Turbine Combat Vehicles

Abstract

The program reported determined the effectiveness of metal mesh filter media for military vehicle air filters when used in a pleated configuration. Three media were tested and their performance was found to be more than adequate. Conclusions: (1) All of the performance characteristics of the conventional filter media can be matched with metal mesh filter media in pleated as well as flat configurations; (2) The performance of pleated filters can be described analytically; (3) The remaining problems that must be investigated and solved before metal mesh media can be implemented in military vehicle applications are those associated with the mechanical design.
