Characterization of Marine Bioadhesive Proteins.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to elucidate the amino acid sequences, via gene sequencing, of the adhesive proteins from the mussel Mytilus edulis and the barnacle Balanus eburneus and of other species, with the aim of understanding how these organisms attach themselves to wet surfaces. We have prepared a cDNA library and sequenced portions of the gene for the mussel adhesive protein. We have also detected proteins in the exudate of the barnacle, but do not know yet whether any of them are adhesive proteins.
