Military Psychiatry: A Tri-Service Perspective.

Abstract

The term military psychiatry defines a particular discipline, with identifiable knowledge and skills, which includes both those of the military and those of psychiatry, but which goes beyond those two and other areas. These areas include an industrial medicine appreciation of the requirements of military duty, a community public health understanding of life in a military family, an education in such subspecialty areas as flight medicine or undersea medicine if one deals with fliers or submariners, a travel agent approach to life in the global village, an epidemiologist awareness of the diseases associated with such a life, and a number of other viewpoints. These disciplines, plus those involved in ordinary psychiatry, identify the military psychiatrist. This report reviews the subject and underscores the requirements for expertise from all these areas, necessary for the training and practice of military psychiatry. Keywords: Stress management; Combat medicine; Chemical warfare; Chemical defense; Combat fatigue; Unit cohesion; Circadian rhythm; Battle Exhaustion; Military psychiatry; Aerospace psychiatry.
