The Transverse Dynamics of Space-Charge Limited Diodes.

Abstract

This work critically reviews past analyses of the transverse dynamics in planar space-charge limited diodes. The electrostatic boundary conditions of the diode, and their effects on the space-charge are examined. The transverse electric field produced by the space-charge and surface charges are found to be small, in agreement with the assumptions of previous analyses. The diodes used in the Aurora Krypton Flourine excimer laser system provide a baseline for the parameters of this analysis. The relativistic treatment of Belov is extended to predict the transverse constriction of the space-charge trajectories. We derive a simple formula for the amount of constriction by two methods. The relativistic equation agrees with the non-relativistic calculation in the low energy limit. Finally, we derive a formula for the trajectories in the presence of an applied axial magnetic field.
