Archaeological Test Excavation and Evaluation of ACQA?A 'YWAWI (10-CW-5) at the Ahsahka Sportsmen's Access Site on the Clearwater River, North Central Idaho.

Abstract

Test excavations at the location of the proposed Ahsahka Sportsmen's Access Site at Ahsahka, Idaho, revealed that an extremely significant multicomponent archaeological site exists at this location. The oldest component dated typologically to 4500-2500 years B.P., the middle component dated to 2500-250 years B.P., and the uppermost component dated to the historic period. The most significant aspect of the site was the abundance of features encountered, especially the house pits. Test excavations indicate that 10-CW-5 is clearly eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places, although its spatial extent and maximum temporal age are not yet known.
