Establishing a Maintenance Technology Gateway,

Abstract

The Joint Depot Maintenance Analysis Group (JDMAG) provides technical support in depot maintenance planning, policy assessment, and other related areas to improve depot maintenance efficiency, economy, and productivity without degradation in combat readiness. Two of its objectives are: (1) to identify advanced technology for depot maintenance, particularly that which will be utilized for weapons systems in operation in the year 2000, and (2) to acquire, analyze, and disseminate information about the technology. To assist JDMAG in meeting these two objectives, the authors looked for both sources of information and a way to effectively disseminate appropriate new technology information. There are at least 100 data sources that contain such information. Dissimilar hardware and software, however, make if difficult to access them. To facilitate access, the authors recommend a microcomputer based intelligent gateway processor. They recommend that JDMAG use this processor to develop a depot maintenance network that will provide: (1) automatic and simultaneous access to multiple data bases, (2) bibliographic retrieval and data formatting capabilities, and (3) on-line instructions to assist users. The JDMAG should acquire and install the processor, and instate access to it for depot maintenance personnel through the Defense Data Network. It is suggested that, until the acquisition can be made, the JDMAG use the Defense Technical Information Center's processor to access information available through it and to gain skills for the ultimate use of its own processor.
