Linear Magnetized Plasma Response to an Oblique Electrostatic Wave.

Abstract

The linear response of a spatially periodic magnetized Vlasov plasma distribution function is computed to second order in the electric field. The results for a specific electric field are then compared with the results of computer simulation for different amplitudes of the electric field. Both trapping and resonant heating are observed, and both appear to contribute (for the chosen parameters) to limiting the validity of linear theory at larger electrical field amplitudes.
