Independent Analysis of Gravity Gradiometer Survey System (GGSS) Development and Deployment: A Synopsis.

Abstract

This final report reviews the development and deployment of the Gravity Gradiometer Survey System (GGSS). The primary areas addressed during the research effort consisted of specification evaluation, test procedures, definition, optimum survey planning, initialization and calibration procedures review, and data analysis. Particularly important results of the effort include: 1) identifying that there was no need to include a master inertial navigation system in the GGSS mechanization, 2) understanding and quantifying the significance of all known error sources on GGSS survey accuracy, and 3) designing and developing a practical algorithm for reducing airborne GGSS data (the template algorithm). Keywords: Geodesy; Gravity; Gravity Gradiometry; Gravity Surveying.
