Validation of the OPAQUE Data from the US/FRG Meppen Site.

Abstract

Under the OPAQUE Program, visible and infrared transmittance and supporting meteorological data were taken around the clock at seven sites in Europe over a period of several years. This report describes the validation of the data taken at the US/FRG site near Meppen from Sept. 1978 to March 1980. Validation consists of two parts: editing and recalibration. First the data is edited to remove invalid data and to assign reliability values. Secondly, the IR transmittances are recalibrated based upon calculated transmittances during periods of high visibility. Several unexplained anomalies in the data were discovered and are discussed. Keywords: Atmospheric transmittance.
