Cloud Archiving Strategies.

Abstract

The Three-dimensional-nephanalysis has been used in the studies of (1) cloud amount time-series; (2) areal distribution of cloud amount and the effect upon cloud archives of different spatial sampling strategies; and (3) cloud height, particularly the relative success in the archiving of low and high cloud information. A global cloud amount climatology for the year 1979 has been compiled from the 3-D nephanalysis archive. Particular attention has been given to the effects upon each of the studies cloud amount characteristics resulting from the incorporation of both conventional surface observations and satellite data. Keywords: Cloud amount time series; Areal cloud amount and spatial sampling; Cloud height; Global cloud climatology.
