Abstract

The Army Aviation Officer Basic Course provides the basic education for new lieutenants assigned to Army Aviation. Phase I of this course is designed to train these new lieutenants in basic soldiering, leadership, and officership skills and combined arms tactics. key to the success of the training is the assignment of aviation captains serving as platoon commanders. They provide instruction and counsel; observe and evaluate leadership and officership skills; and serve as role models. This report is an article for publication meant to inform the Army Aviation community of the purpose, scope, and content of the AVNOBC, discuss the role of the platoon commander; and examine the effectiveness of the role of the platoon commander and the course.
