Mentoring Lieutenants.

Abstract

A great deal has been written on the subject of mentoring since it was emphasized in the Army Chief of Staff's 1985 White Paper. The professional civilian community has emphasized the subject for some time. As the Army has evaluated the concept, considerable conjecture has resulted concerning how to initiate a mentoring system within the Army. This paper reviews the current literature and provides a mentoring paradigm which identifies mentor behaviors and three distinct and interactive phases in the process - professional development, reciprocal role modeling, and sponsoring, Implications are examined and recommendations provided, with emphasis on the need to improve the phase one topics -- traditional professional development. The recent Professional Development of Officers Study concluded that improved Professional Development programs within units and organizations need significant improvement as they may be the real key to developing the future leaders the Army needs. This paper concludes that a standardized Professional Development Program is needed for each rank. It then focuses on ideas by which to develop such a program for lieutenants. Twenty-two specific examples supplement the distribution in battalion and brigade pre-command courses, or for assisting in the development of a standardized professional development program for lieutenants.
