Incoherent Optical Correlator.

Abstract

Incoherent optical correlation offers advantages of speed, large mechanical tolerances, freedom from speckle, and compactness in comparison to coherent correlation. Experiments are discussed which were devised to determine the potential of incoherent optical correlation for a target recognition applications. A means for achieving aspect insensitive recognition for one model tank while rejecting a different model tank is evaluated. Factors affecting system response and efficiency are discussed and experimental results are presented. Considerations are reviewed and suggestions are made for design of incoherent correlators. Keywords: Optical pattern recognition; Incoherent optical correlation; Distortion invariance.
