Applicability of Artificial Intelligence to the Global Decision Support System

Abstract

The Global Decision Support System (GDSS) is a prototype command and control center for the Military Airlift Command (MAC). This computer network links the top three levels of MAC's command structure, and as changes are made, all other nodes are updated automatically. This study evaluates the suitability of incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) with GDSS. The basics of AI expert systems and Natural Language Processors is examined. The study concludes that while technically feasible, integration would be operationally impractical until certain technical and organizational milestones are achieved.
