The RADC (Rome Air Development Center) High Latitude Meteor Scatter Test Bed.

Abstract

This report contains a description of the High Latitude Meteor Scatter Test Bed and some preliminary results. The test-bed, with terminals at Sondrestrom Air Base and Thule Air Base, Greenland, is located inside the northern polar cap to collect information on meteor scatter communications system connectivity at high latitudes as a function of ionospheric conditions, time of day, and season. In addition, the test bed operates on four frequencies to enable studies of the properties of meteor scatter communications as a function of frequency during normal and disturbed conditions. The work covered by this report includes an evaluation of the availability, capacity, and signaling rates for hypothetical meteor scatter communication systems using a variety of modulation schemes. Keywords: Meteor scatter propagation; HIgh latitude effects; Meteor scatter frequency dependence; Meteor scatter statistics; Meteor scatter communication performance.
