A Model for Evaluating the Effectiveness of a Systematic Search for a Moving Target.

Abstract

The primary objective of this project is to estimate the effectiveness of a systematic search conducted against a randomly moving target and to generate target density curves in the search area after the search. In this problem, searcher course and speed are fixed known values. The target course is also fixed, but is randomly selected. The measure of effectiveness (MOE) is the total equivalent area searched. The approach to the problem in this project is a modification of the methods of B.O. Koopman in 'Search and Screening . The method first calculates the target location density rho at each point in a specified area A, and then integrates (1-rho) over A. The result is a measure of how effectively area A was searched.
