Air Certification for Movement of Ammunition In/On M998 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV).

Abstract

The U.S. Army Defense Ammunition Center and School (USADACS) has been requested by the Department of the Air Force, Headquarters, Aeronautical Systems Division, through the Department of the Army, Military Traffic Management Command (MTMC), MTT-TRV, to provide additional technical information for Air Certification of Movement of Ammunition In/On M998 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV). Additional data is required to confirm that the lateral restraint provided by M998 wheel wells can withstand a 1.5 G loading and that ammunition pallet box containing 2,270 pounds of ammunition be verified under MIL-A-8421. On 19 November 1986, two tests were performed to provide data for certification of this load configuration. An internal thrust load was applied between the wheel wells of the M998 HMMWV. The thrusting force of 3,350 pounds (1.5 x maximum payload) did not cause permanent deformation in the wheel well covers. The ammunition pallet box weighing 2,270 pounds was tested in accordance with MIL-STD-1660, Method 5023, Federal Test Method Standard 101B, Incline Impact Test, to the force levels specified in MIL-A-8421, Air Transportability Requirements, General Specification For. The restrained ammunition pallet box received impact shocks varying from 2.13 G's to 3.5 G's without damage. The details of these tests are contained in this report. Keywords: MIL-1660, MIL, Air certification, Boxed ammunition, Vehicles, Loading, Ammunition, Tiedown.
