Rear Operations: Can We Execute the Doctrine?

Abstract

This essay takes a look at US Army doctrine for the Airland Battle as it pertains to rear operations and is described in Field Manuals 100-5 and 90-14. Critical issues are raised concerning our ability to implement the doctrine in the near term. Issues raised fall in the areas of command and control, communications, command interest, RAOC's training and equipment shortfalls. Some solutions and quick fixes are offered as possibilities for concerned commanders. The essay recognizes the progress made in focusing attention on the fight in the rear with the publication of our Airland Battle doctrine, but stresses the need for improvements in several areas to properly execute rear operations.
