Geotechnical Model Testing Using Centrifuges.

Abstract

This grant provided funds for the installation of a geotechnical centrifuge facility, to be used for research in which models for foundations on earth structures are tested in an elevated gravity field so as to provide properly scaled stresses and strains. Some of the key features of this machine are: Swinging platforms, Maximum acceleration: 200g, Maximum payload: (coil or rock plus container plus instrumentation and any operating parts): 200 lb., Maximum combination: 30,000 g-lbs (15g-tons), Maximum dimensions of payload: 20 in. x 20 in. (prototype horizontal) by about 16 in. high, Radius to axle of swinging platform: 42 in.; typical effective radius to centroid of model: about 48 in., 24 shielded electrical slip rings, 4 hydraulic slip rings, A closed-circuit TV viewing system.
