Range Services Manual.

Abstract

The purpose of this manual is to present the results of a survey of U.S. owned 3D underwater tracking ranges and other facilities which are frequented by submarines. This manual will serve as the data base of range information to be used in Project LINEAR CHAIR. This has a requirement for an array similar to arrays in other programs involving deep ocean, acoustic, current, and magnetic measurements. A fixed deep water array and range are envisioned as satisfying both the tracking magnetic measurement needs of Project LINEAR CHAIR. The emphasis on the fixed deep water array concept is maximization of submarine tracking and accuracy array stability and consequent accuracy of magnetic measurements. In order to satisfy these two requirements, the notion of array rigidity will be introduced into the array's conceptual development, and the array implantment will be at a 3-D tracking range whose submarine tracking accuracy is an established fact. Such an array, when implanted will not be easily moved, and is conceived of as being permanent and capable of being operated over a period of several years. It is possible that such an array could be used to expand the measurement capability of a high quality acoustic range (such as St. Croix, for example) to include collateral acoustic magnetic measurements, thus opening the door to general multisensor utilizations.
