Development of Realistic Job Previews for the Long Beach Naval Shipyard.

Abstract

Global and trade-specific videotapes were developed of the Long Beach Naval Shipyard for use in apprentice placement. Based on review by shipyard management, the orientation and the trade-specific realistic job previews (RJPs) should challenge applicant perceptions and instill appropriate expectations. However, in view of time constraints on applicant processing, these videotapes may require shortening. In addition, while highly accurate and revealing, the three trade-specific RJPs may need further work to enhance their ability to hold viewer attention (e.g., using more on-screen job incumbent narration). The RJPs developed should be revised to the point where they can be field tested, perhaps at a job fair or during interviews. According to projections for jobs with low retention, the number of hires needed to keep 100 jobs filled can be reduced from 500 to about 400 by using RJPs.
