Evaluation of 350F Curing Adhesive Systems on Phosphoric Acid Anodized Aluminum Substrates.

Abstract

Ten different 350 F (177 C) curing adhesive/primer systems were used to bond phosphoric acid anodized aluminum test specimens. The objective of the program was to compare the compatibility of these adhesive/primer systems, with phosphoric acid anodized and sulfuric/dichromate acid etched aluminum surfaces. All the specimens were prepared by Douglas Aircraft Company during the PABST program and tested at the University of Dayton. Lap shear, peel, and stress-durability tests were carried out. The test results indicated several general types of behavior. Firstly, the predominate failure mode for most of the adhesive/primer systems in all three types of tests was an interfacial failure between the primer and adhesive. Secondly, little to no difference is observed between the results for the anodized adn acid/dichromate etched surface treatments, although a few of the specific adhesive/primer/alloy/test type combinations exhibited better or worse properties for one surface type than the other.
