Review of 183 GHz Moisture Profile Retrieval Studies.

Abstract

A brief review of published studies of water vapor retrievals using th millimeter wave water vapor resonance at 183.31 GHz is presented. Both simulation and aircraft experimental studies are covered. Results are summarized based on meteorological, sensor system, and retrieval approach considerations. A number of problem areas are identified including those associated with uncertainties in millimeter wave optical properties of surfaces and gaseous absorption and the dielectric properties of liquid and solid water species, the potential effects of clouds and precipitation, and surface elevation effects.
