Marine Corps Automated Food Service Operations System Test Report

Abstract

The Marine Corps Automated Food Service Operations Systems (MCAFSOS) project, initiated as a result of the Defense Audit Service's audit of the DoD Food Service Program in May 1980 and the General Accounting Office's report to the Secretary of Defense on DoD Food Service needs and improvements in October 1981, was implemented and tested in three messhalls at the Marine Corps Development and Education Command (MCDEC) Quantico, VA, between April and November 1986. The automated system, developed at the US Army Natick Research, Development and Engineering Center, was based on the IBM Series/1 minicomputer and covered forecasting, meal production, accounting, inventory, and file maintenance functions at the messhall level. Test results indicated that the automated system was preferred to the manual system because it significantly reduced the amount of time required to process food service forms.
