Studies in Ambient Temperature Ionic Liquids.

Abstract

Chemical and electrochemical studies were carried out in ambient temperature molten salts composed of aluminum chloride mixed with either (butyl)pyridinium chloride or methyl ethylimidazolium chloride. Electrochemical, spectroscopic and NMR work was carried out on electroactive polymers prepared in situ in the molten salt, or on redox polymers prepared ex situ, but investigated in the molten salts. 'Neutral' melts were employed for studies of complex ion stoichiometry and chloride oxidation. A number of species, metal carbonyls, ferrocene, iodine-iodide, were investigated electrochemically as a function of melt acidity. NMR proton relaxation studies on the 'tail' of the butylpyridinium cation were carried out correlations made to melt composition and viscosity. Keywords: Ionic liquids, Ambient temperature molten salts, Electrochemistry, Chloraluminates.
