Optical Architectures for Matrix Processing.
Abstract
A study to explore optical methods for performing eigen system calculation based on matrix vector or matrix matrix multiplications has been completed. Several implementations of eigen system solution algorithms including digital multiplication by analog convolution and bit parallel multiplication were analyzed to determine performance/cost tradeoffs. All methods were determined to have unsatisfactory multiplication speed and efficiency. Two new approaches to the problem, optically interconnected electronic multipliers and position coded residue optoelectronic look-up table (LUT) processing, were proposed. After analysis and LUT implementation, both methods appear feasible and merit further investigation. Keywords: Optical processing; Optical computing architectures; Acousto-optic processors; Residue arithemtic; Digital multiplication; Analog convolution parallel multiplication; Circularly polarizing sampling.
