Perceptions of Successful Field Grade Officers Concerning the Retention Impact of Selected Army Programs and Policies.

Abstract

The study identifies those perceptions of a sample of field grade officers concerning the retention factor of a number of Army attitudes, programs, and policies. The sample population included members of the U.S. Army War College Class of 1987, Faculty of the War College, and Staff Leaders from the Combined Arms and Service Staff School (CAS 3). The study was conducted using a survey instrument of 61 responses and then a computer assisted tabulation. The results of the study show six factors that were rated as very positive to retaining officers. One factor that received a high percentage of negative ratings is also discussed. Included in the discussion and the appendices are the written comments that were provided by some of the participants. While the study is limited to evaluation of those factors identified in the survey instrument and written comments, the trends expressed are indicative of potential importance to the Army as a whole. The study represents a restrictive effort by one individual and as such has its short comings, however, the sample population is so creditable that the results warrant further consideration. The total computer printouts were not included in the results but have been retained at the United States Army War College for future reference.
