Energy Transfer Processes of Important Atmospheric Species.

Abstract

Recent work in our laboratory has concentrated on the kinetics of metastable molecular nitrogen, N2(A 3 sigma (+) sub u). Investigations have included measuring v-level specific bimolecular rate constants for the reactions of N2(A, < or = 6) with relatively efficient electronic quenchers (02, NO, CO, N2O, and C2H4) and inefficient electronic quenchers (CH4 and CF4). The latter set of quenchers has provided information on the relative N2(A, v) population distribution in the discharge flow reactor for various N2(A 3 sigma (+) sub u) generating reactions and N2 concentrations. In addition, v-level specific rate constants are measured for the reaction N2(A v < or = 3) + O(3P) and measured the absolute nitric oxide product yield in the reaction N2(A) + O2/O(3P) as a function of the relative N2(A, v) population distribution using calibrated NO LEF.
