Evaluation of a Dual-Lidar Method for Measuring Aerosol Extinction.

Abstract

This report describes a method for determining aerosol distributions in the atmosphere using a technique that obtains extinction coefficient profiles and integrated extinction between two points. To implement this scheme, two lidars are set up at opposite ends of a propagation path and pointed toward each other. Since two equations are available to solve for the two unknowns, no assumptions are required concerning aerosol distributions. Keywords: Two lidar method; Visioceilometer lidars; S(R) curves; Extinction coefficient; profiled; Backscatter coefficient.
