Semiempirical Band Structure of PtGa2.

Abstract

A semi-empirical band structure for PtGa2 was obtained by adjusting the AuGa2 parameters in the Mixed-Basis Band Structure Interpolation Scheme (MBBSIS) to obtain agreement between the calculated total Density-of-States (DOS) and X ray Photoemission Spectroscopy (XPS) data. Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (ARPES) data collected from a PtGa2 (111) surface with a noble gas discharge lamp as excitation source were used to check the energies of the d-bands. The PtGa2 band structure is compared to those of both elemental Pt and Au, and the gold color of PtGa2 is explained in terms of its Au-like DOS.
