Equilibrium Analysis of Axially Loaded Cylindrical Inclusions.

Abstract

Calculational analyses have been performed to study the inclusion problem associated with right circular cylinders taken to be representative of gauge packages emplaced in geologic media. The analyses performed may be categorized as uniaxial quasi-static, where samples of geologic medium containing an inclusion are subjected to uniaxial strain. The resulting equilibrium stress fields are studied with variation of the constitutive properties of both the host medium and the inclusion, and with variation of the nominal stress level. Inclusions comprised of one material and of two materials are considered in this study. Results of these analyses suggest that gauge packages should be designed with the constitutive behavior of the host medium and with the anticipated stress level borne in mind.
