Medicare: Payments to Radiologists, Anesthesiologists, and Pathologists.

Abstract

This briefing report provides information on three hospital-based physician specialties--radiologists, anesthesiologists and pathologies (RAPs). The Chairman of the Subcommittee on Health, House Committee on Ways and Means asked us to answer a series of questions about RAPs concerning:--the contractual arrangements between hospitals and RAPs, --the level of physicians' net incomes and percentage return on the cost of medical training, --medicare service volume on per beneficiary basis, --medicare controls on the volume of these physicians, --the geographic variation in payment rates for their services. RAPs provide services essential to the operation of hospitals and necessary for the diagnosis and treatment of illness and injury.
