Centrifugal and Numerical Modeling of Buried Structures. Volume 1. Executive Summary.

Abstract

This volume is an executive summary of the research project on centrifugal and numerical modeling of buried structures subjected to static and dynamic loadings on the ground surface. Techniques were developed for testing model buried pipes in a geotechnical centrifuge. An impact generator was developed for applying an airblast loading on the centrifuge model. A dynamic stress gage was developed for measuring the stresses generated in the soil and acting on the buried pipe during the airblast loading. Finite element analyses were performed on the buried pipe experiments. Comparison between centrifuge test data and analytical results is used to validate the numerical analysis procedure. Keywords: Soil-structure interaction; Centrifuge model testing; Static loading.
