A Study of the Committee Structure of Ireland Army Hospital, Fort Knox, Kentucky.

Abstract

Ireland Army Hospital at Fort Knox, KY is confronted with tandem challenges of cost containment and decreased productivity, and the prospects of a continued physician shortage in the face of an increasing workload. IAH's matrix organizational structure has, with the new JCAH standard in quality assurance, placed even more emphasis on the need for an effective and efficient committee structure. Each year countless hours are expended by key numbers of the hospital's clinical and administrative staff in committee meetings. For the most part this time is considered both officially and unofficially to be non-productive time. This paper will analyze Ireland Army Hospital's existing committee structure in light of the following three objectives: to maximize the hospital staff's productive time; to maximize the hospital's committee coordination and integrative efforts; and, to ensure that AMEDD requirements and JCAH standards are satisfied. Keywords: Hospital administration and management;theses.
