Durability and Damage Tolerance of Aluminum Castings.

Abstract

The results from the initial 21 months of the program are presented. They include (a) an assessment of Nondestructive methods for castings, and (b) the effect of process variables on the mechanical properties and microstructure of A357-Tb and A201-T7. A new ultrasonic NDI method called Frequency Attenuation Inflection (FAI) was evaluated for determining the type and amount defects in A357 and A201 aluminum castings. A low frequency eddy current method for detecting the presence of cracks through face sheet and fasteners was assessed. Relationship among chemical composition, heat treatment, solidification rate, microstructure, and mechanical properties of the premium quality casting alloys A357-T6 and A201-T7 were investigated. Keywords: Aluminum castings, Mechanical properties, Specifications, Regression analyses, Composition, Heat treatment, Solidification rate, Microstructure.
