An Investigation of the Memory Response of the Local Immune System to Shigella Antigens

Abstract

In the present studies we have learned how to enhance the initial mucosal immune response of the intestine to the enteropathogen Shigella flexneri. By administering heat-killed Shigella X16 a day prior to the oral challenge with live Shigella X16, a significant enhancement of the early secretory IgA response to Shigella lipopolysaccharide was demonstrated. This response does not require priming
