Biological Activity of Chloropentafluorobenzene
Abstract
The potential biological activity of chloropentafluorobenzene (CPFB) was evaluated using a battery of in vitro short-term tests. The assays included in this evaluation were the Salmonella Mutagenicity Assay, the Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) Cell Mutation Assay, the CHO/Sister Chromatid Exchange and Chromosome Aberration Assay, the Primary Rat Hepatocyte Unscheduled DNA synthesis Assay, and the BALB/c-3T3 Transformation Assay. Initial solubility studies indicated that CPFB was soluble in culture medium using glass dishes at 200 mg/ml. The maximum concentration tested was 1 mg/ml. The studies suggest that CPFB has significant cytogenetic abnormalities in the Sister Chromatid Exchange Assay and marginally significant results in the Chromosomal Aberration Assay at the highest doses in all four tests and at lower doses in two tests. The BALB/c-3T3d Transformation Assay indicated weakly positive effects of CPFB without metabolic activation and positive results with activation at the highest doses. CPFB was negative in the Salmonella Mutagenicity Assay, the CHO Cell Mutation Assay, and the Primary Rat Hepatocyte Unscheduled DNA Synthesis Assay. Keywords: Chloropentafluorobenzene, Genotoxicity.
