Is Available Training at Aeronautical Systems Division Adequate for the Rapidly Increasing Role of Manufacturing Managers?
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine whether the training available to manufacturing managers at Aeronautical Systems Division (ASD) adequately prepares them for their increasing role in controlling costs, schedule and performance in the acquisition of major weapon systems. Personal interviews were used to accomplish this objective. Four classes of individuals were interviewed: Working level manufacturing managers at ASD; Supervisory level manufacturing managers at ASD; Senior manufacturing management at ASD; Educators. The bulk of the interviews were with the supervisory level manufacturing the manufacturing manager The study examined: the role of the manufacturing manager in the System Program Office at ASD; the sourced of training for manufacturing managers and their effectiveness; the barriers which prevent manufacturing managers from receiving training; the adequacy of the current training; and the efforts being made to improve training. Based on the answers from the interviewees, the overall conclusion arrived at by this study is that the training available to manufacturing managers at ASD is not adequate to prepare them for the role they play in the acquisition of major weapon system.
