Ordered Polymers for Space Applications.

Abstract

The synthesis of polybenzazole (PBZ) polymers and model compounds was studied to determine their (1) potential for use in nonlinear optical (NLO) applications and (2) reaction kinetics and chemo-rheology of polymerization in the ordered phase. Specific compounds that should exhibit high figures of merit NLO applications have been identified. The synthesis of PBZ polymers with controlled molecular weight is described, including a description of the synthesis variables important in attaining high intrinsic viscosity and low shear viscosity nematic solutions, leading to improved processability and reproducibility. THe phenomenon of mesophase-enhanced polymerization of poly(p-phenylenebenzobisthiazole) (PBT) and the chemo-rheological properties at various shear rates were investigated.
