Plasma Joining of Metal Matrix Composites.

Abstract

Aluminum Zirconium Silicon Carbide and Aluminum Titanium Silicon Carbide composite powder filler metals prepared for butt welding of Ai/SiC composite base plates to be used for weldment mechanical property studies are described. Two composite powder filler metal compositions were prepared in moderate quantities for use in preparation of larger scale butt welds in A1/SiC composite base plates. Each composition was designed to provide reactive metal concentrations than hav e been used previously while maintaining a two phase (A1(Zr) - A13Zr and A1(Ti) - A13Ti, respectively) matrix microstructure. This represents an attempt to maintain a reasonably ductile matrix phase while providing sufficient reactive metal concentration for suppression of interfacial A14C3 formation during plasma processing.
