Proceedings of Geomagnetic Autonomous Shuttle-Launched Probe Held in NSTL, Mississippi on 12-14 March 1986.

Abstract

Worldwide aeromagnetic surveys are conducted for collecting magnetic data (PROJECT MAGNET). This method is very expensive, does not provide global coverage at required modeling densities, and does not provide data in politically inaccessible areas. To circumvent these deficiencies a spaceborne magnetometer system is being developed to support the global magnetic mapping requirements the Geomagnetic Autonomous Shuttle-launched Probe (GASP). The GASP would be valuable for the scientific study of both core and lithosphere magnetic fields. They felt that any mission that met the DMA accuracy requirements-a half-degree RMS globally in variation over the 5-year life of the chart-was felt to be of scientific value, but that greater accuracy would be desirable. The use of vector magnetic field measurements in addition to scalar measurements was recommended as a means to achieve increased accuracy. The participants pointed out that further study would be needed to quantify the improvements possible through use of vector measurements. Further study was also recommended to determine the value of ground-based vector measurements in addition to the GASP satellite-based measurements. The earlier POGO and MAGSAT (Satellite Magnetic Field Mapping) missions provided data over a wide range of altitudes, but the proposed GASP satellite orbit is more nearly circular. The circular orbit would mean that magnetic field models produced from only GASP scalar data would be less accurate than similar models produced from POGO or MAGSAT scalar data.
